Winter biking

We had a wonderful taste of winter biking over the weekend before today's big thaw.

Mountain biking roots

While mountain bikes are now ubiquitous and mainstream prior to the mid to early 80's no such sport existed. The clear precurser was the "repack" races in California otherwise known as by a term all but forgotten "klunking". The following video from the late 1970's features among other people Gary Fisher (at 3:00min) who who's mountain bikes are still popular sellers in the shop today.

Saturday's Ottawa national wildlife refuge ride

Some of the Fremont Flatlanders bicycle clumb members and I (including Dan Willis and Dan Waggoner) headed out to the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Saturday afternoon to ride and make some beard-cicles in the cold before the sun went down.

A hilight on our ride was a mile or so of some of the best beach riding I've ever done and I have done a lot of beach riding as of late. The sand seemed to be frozen and we road it as easily from the waters edge to the grass line as one would ride down the sidewalk.

What's more I've never seen Lake Erie so calm. Barely a ripple as small patches of ice began forming out on the lake.

Plenty of deer, waterfowl and at least four different eagles were spoted including several nests.

Sunday breakfast ride

Included are some pics from our wonderful Sunday ride down the Maumee Canal Trail with Mark, Susan and Hubert from TAB.

We started at Sidecut Metro Park at 9am, road down to Grand Rapids Ohio for breakfast and back. I'm hoping it becomes a weekly TAB ride. It started out overcast and 19 degrees but zero wind and by the end of the ride it was clear blue bird day.
