Get Ready for Spring Riding

As February draws to a close, Spring, with the promise of better weather and warmer temperatures, gets closer. If you haven’t been on your ElliptiGO since late fall, consider bringing the GO down to your local bicycle shop to have them give it a tune-up. You'll want to make sure the cables are functioning correctly, all bolts are securely fastened, and that the chain is lubed and ready for smooth riding. Even better, if you have been lucky enough to ride outside through the winter, it's a really good idea to take the bike down to your local store for a tune-up or at the very least give it a thorough cleaning to get the salt, sand, and road debris off and help keep your ElliptiGO running smoothly.

If you have been enduring the pains of winter indoors on a trainer, it would be a good idea to check out your tires prior to jumping on the road again. Although your ElliptiGO tires are good for several thousand miles, if you have been riding all year plus using the indoor trainer heavily, it may be time for replacements. Take a good look at both tires, but especially the rear for any excess wear or sidewall damage. You want to make sure before you start commuting or training outdoors again that you do not wind up with a flat due to a worn rear tire. Many times, if just the back tire is worn, you can simply rotate your front tire to the rear and just get one replacement tire instead of buying two new ones.

If you do need to purchase a new tire, we offer them on our webstore or your local ElliptiGO/Bicycle retailer will be able to assist you.

Remember to pump up your tires to 85-90 PSI before every ride to keep the tires performing optimally and to reduce your chance of a flat tire. And if you have any questions or concerns, please contact our customer service department at service@elliptigo.com. We're happy to help you have the best riding experience possible.

Happy Riding!

Morning ride at Ottawa wildlife refuge

It was an awesome morning for riding at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. Fresh tracks in the snow and plenty of challenging beach riding.

Saturday at Castalia quarry

Scott, Jeremy, Jeff, Brad and I all made it out to Castalia quarry last Saturday afternoon for a quick ride.

Not a whole lot of trail but some of it is quite technical and the scenery is spectacular.

Mountain biking roots

While mountain bikes are now ubiquitous and mainstream prior to the mid to early 80's no such sport existed. The clear precurser was the "repack" races in California otherwise known as by a term all but forgotten "klunking". The following video from the late 1970's features among other people Gary Fisher (at 3:00min) who who's mountain bikes are still popular sellers in the shop today.

Saturday's Ottawa national wildlife refuge ride

Some of the Fremont Flatlanders bicycle clumb members and I (including Dan Willis and Dan Waggoner) headed out to the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Saturday afternoon to ride and make some beard-cicles in the cold before the sun went down.

A hilight on our ride was a mile or so of some of the best beach riding I've ever done and I have done a lot of beach riding as of late. The sand seemed to be frozen and we road it as easily from the waters edge to the grass line as one would ride down the sidewalk.

What's more I've never seen Lake Erie so calm. Barely a ripple as small patches of ice began forming out on the lake.

Plenty of deer, waterfowl and at least four different eagles were spoted including several nests.

Sunday breakfast ride

Included are some pics from our wonderful Sunday ride down the Maumee Canal Trail with Mark, Susan and Hubert from TAB.

We started at Sidecut Metro Park at 9am, road down to Grand Rapids Ohio for breakfast and back. I'm hoping it becomes a weekly TAB ride. It started out overcast and 19 degrees but zero wind and by the end of the ride it was clear blue bird day.

Great new bike path development in Toledo

Huge new news for the Toledo area bike path network.

Local groups have purchased a 11.6 mile rail corridor from Temperance
Michigan through Sylvania, Ohio across the Maumee river and up into
Rossford... including the rail bridge across the Maumee!

It will be when finished the pinnacle of the toledo bike network both
because of the bridge and since it runs north south connecting pretty
much all the E-W bike paths in addition university campuses and
schools. It's going to be awesome. :) Only negative... it's going to
take five years before any of it is open to bikes and 20 years or more
before they get it completely open.

The PDF map linked to from the article shows the route:

from: New Trail Project the Key to Toledo's Transportation Future

The city of Toledo in northern Ohio is on the verge of greatly expanding its transportation capacity, with the recent purchase of an abandoned rail corridor through the city for conversion to rail-trail.

In a series of deals completed late last month, the Trust for Public Land (TPL) arranged the purchase of an 11.6-mile rail corridor from CSX Transportation, Inc. The majority of the funding for the $6.5 million purchase came from federal transportation funds allocated with the support of Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-9) in the last highway reauthorization bill (SAFETEA-LU), which passed Congress in 2005. Congresswoman Kaptur was recognized by many involved with the project as being critical to its progress.
